Today, U.S. District Court Judge Michael J. McShane announced from the bench that he will grant a preliminary injunction to block new restrictions on the federal Title X family planning program from taking effect on May 3. Judge McShane noted that he will grant a preliminary injunction against the Trump administration’s “gag rule” that bars Title X-funded health centers from providing abortion referrals. He also said that will provide preliminary injunctive relief to block implementation of the prohibition on family planning and abortion services being provided in the same location. Judge McShane will issue his decision with the full scope of his injunction this week.

Statement by Essential Access Health President and CEO, Julie Rabinovitz:

“As we await Judge McShane’s full decision, his announcement from the bench puts us one step closer to making sure that these harmful and unlawful regulations never take effect. Judge McShane’s strong rebuke of the regulations should send a strong message to the Trump Administration - putting politics over public health is a losing proposition. We stand with the Plaintiffs in Oregon and will continue to fight to protect Title X’s mandate to ensure access to comprehensive family planning services for the millions of low-income patients who rely on the program for care nationwide.”

Essential Access Health’s preliminary injunction motion was heard in the Northern District Court of California before Judge Edward Chen on April 18. A decision in that case is still pending.
