What is PrEP?

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective medication for people who are HIV negative to take once daily to lower their risk of getting HIV in the future.

Who is PrEP for?

PrEP is for anyone who is trying to protect themselves from HIV. Talk to your doctor about PrEP if you:

  • Do not regularly use condoms
  • Have a partner who is HIV positive or has a higher risk of getting HIV

How much does PrEP cost?

PrEP is covered without a co-pay or cost-sharing by Medi-Cal and most private insurance plans in California.

Check your insurance plan to see if Truvada or Descovy are on the list of covered drugs. If you are unsure, it may be necessary to call your insurer directly to confirm coverage details.
