May Revise Proposal Disproportionately Cuts Reproductive Health Access + Fails to Live Up to California’s Promise
Los Angeles, CA – In response to Governor Newsom’s May Revision of the FY 2025–2026 state budget, Essential Access Health is urging the Governor and state legislature to include critical investments to safeguard access to essential sexual and reproductive health care in the final budget.
“California has long been a leader in protecting and advancing reproductive health care — and we need that leadership now more than ever. Proposed cuts and exclusion of critical funding in the May Revise put access to essential services like birth control, STI treatment, and abortion care at serious risk,” said Amy Moy, Co-CEO of Essential Access Health.
“These are challenging times that call for difficult decisions, but the May Revise disproportionately places the pain points directly on access to essential health care for millions of people with lower-incomes and the health care safety-net that serves them. With the uncertainty we are facing at the federal level, California cannot and should not exacerbate an already bad situation by leaving millions of dollars on the table and disregarding the will of voters who overwhelmingly passed Proposition 35 to bolster our Medi-Cal system. We are committed to working with the legislature and administration to maintain our vital health programs and infrastructure, and keep California’s promise to be a beacon of hope and safe haven as a reproductive freedom state.”
