STD Prevention

If you’re having any kind of sex, you need to think about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Regular STD screenings are important to make sure you are healthy and not transmitting a STD to someone else. That’s why Essential Access Health works in partnership with the California STD Control Branch, county health departments, and providers across the state to make sure you have access to the high quality health care services and information you need to prevent STDs.

Know the Facts

  • More than half of all sexually active people will get a STD at some time in their lives.
  • Chlamydia and gonorrhea are easily preventable, but if left untreated can lead to serious permanent damage to a woman’s reproductive organs.
  • In 2011, there were over 164,000 cases of chlamydia in California.

The best way to protect yourself from STDs is to wear a condom every time you have sex.

Although using condoms is the best way to prevent STDs if you have sex, they are not the most effective birth control method available. To protect yourself against STDs and unintended pregnancy, use a both condom and a more effective form of birth control.

Since the most common symptom of STDs is having no symptoms at all, the only way to know for sure is to get tested

Do you live in Los Angeles?
